Ultrasn0w Unlocks iPhone 3G[s] after Purplera1n Jailbreak
It has been confirmed that the Ultrasn0w unlock app for the iPhone 3G does in fact work for the iPhone 3G[s] as well. You do need to jailbreak first with Geohot’s Purplera1n solution.
Purplera1n does not activate your phone so you will need a legit AT&T sim card in order to jailbreak, but then you can unlock with Ultrasn0w, availble in Cydia, then slip in your T-Mobile sim.

Jailbreak for iPhone 3G[s] is That Much Closer: Says GeoHot
George Hotz, aka Geohot, has done it again. Famed for creating the first hardware unlock for the OG iPhone, Geohot has just released the first official pics of a jailbroken iPhone 3G[s]. Geohot has mentioned on Twitter that it is as simple as a 10 line change to the current release of Redsn0w.
Geohot also says that he will be sharing this with the iPhone Dev-Team rather than packaging his own tool for public release. He explains that they have the back-end work already taken care of for a mass public release. This is great because this means that the jailbreak for the iPhone 3G[s] is just around the corner. I’m sure the Dev-Team will want to do testing, but if it is as simple as changing 10 lines of code like Geohot says, it won’t be long.

iPhone 3G S Jailbreak and Unlock Confirmed: Released Soon
It still amazes me how quickly this group of hackers are able to get into devices and find holes they can exploit. A jailbreak and unlock solution is confirmed by the iPhone Dev-Team. The same 24Kpwn exploit used to jailbreak the iPod Touch 2G with Redsn0w can be used for the iPhone 3G S, confirmed by the iPhone Dev-Team late last night.
They have not packaged a jailbreak solution yet, but because of the same basic weaknesses that allow Redsn0w to jailbreak the other Apple devices, it should be no time at all till we see it released. They explain that they want to make sure that they safely package this before release, which didn’t take them that long for 3.0.
An unlock solution has also been found for the iPhone 3G S, it’s called Ultrasn0w. Yes, the very same application to unlock the iPhone 3G has been confirmed to work with the iPhone 3G S. They say that Ultrasn0w is ready right now to unlock the 3G S, without any modifications what-so-ever.

3.0 Jailbreak Pwnage Tool For Mac OS X Now Available For Download
The iPhone Dev-Team have officially released their Pwnage Tool application for jailbreaking the iPhone OG, iPhone 3G, and iPod Touch 1st Gen running OS 3.0. This release is only for use on a Mac running OS X. A similar tool, QuickPwn for Mac and PC, will be released very soon. As always you are cautioned to use this at your own risk as it may void your warranty and if you don’t follow directions well then you may want to find someone who can because you could bork up your device. Here is the release straight from the iPhone Dev-Team blog. Make sure you read the entire post to make sure your device is supported. There are certain restrictions if your phone is unlocked and if you have an iPod Touch 2nd Gen. Download links for the Pwnage Tool are included.
This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.0 firmware from Apple, read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of some bugs and unexpected changes this will be a multipart release, starting with the release of PwnageTool for Mac OS X. QuickPwn for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime soon, please don’t bug us about it, we are working flat out to get everything finished to release them.
- GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use PwnageTool right now. UltraSn0w is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be release via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 unlock works with this PwnageTool release.
- Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you can get it via Cydia or Icy).
- Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
- Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
- At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.0 capable version of PwnageTool.
- This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release.
- PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
- PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.
Baseband 101
The ‘baseband’ is the generic nickname given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network. Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features). The 3.0 update for the iPhone 3G contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband.
SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G
This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, simply upgrade to 3.0 using iTunes and then use PwnageTool to create an ipsw and then use this to jailbreak your phone.
iPhone 2G (1st Generation)
Update or Restore your iPhone 2G with iTunes then use PwnageTool to do the magic, ‘nuff said, you don’t need to worry about anything, the baseband will be unlocked, the phone jailbroken.
iPod Touch 1G (Original iPod Touch)
Update to 3.0 with iTunes and use PwnageTool.
iPod Touch 2G (New iPod Touch)
Sorry, no support at this time within PwnageTool, use Redsn0w instead.

Yellowsnow Ultrasnow Carrier Unlock For OS 3.0" href="http://rotilda.com/169/iphone-dev-team-announce-yellowsnow-carrier-unlock-for-os-30" rel="bookmark"> iPhone Dev Team Announce Yellowsnow Ultrasnow Carrier Unlock For OS 3.0
The iPhone Dev Team has released, on their blog, that they have successfully ported their Yellowsnow carrier unlock to work with the upcoming Apple release of iPhone OS 3.0. The Yellowsnow unlock was developed for the 3G iPhone when OS 2.0 was released. Many users were hoping for this because if you had been using an iPhone 3G on a carrier, other then AT&T, you would not be able to take advantage of the new functionality in the much anticipated 3.0 update, without losing their call function. No worries now apparently; the Dev Team says they will showcase their official/unofficial Yellowsnow Ultrasnow unlock today via a live feed. A member of the Dev Team, MuscleNerd, will twitter the live feed link later this afternoon. If you want to see this first hand make sure you follow @MuscleNerd on Twitter.
I have been locked to AT&T since the release of the OG iPhone and have had no need to use the Yellowsnow unlock, but apparently many have. I have never seen
the reason for unlocking the iPhone when AT&T forces your to sign a 2 year contract. Unlocking the iPhone only makes sense if you purchase your iPhone from the plethora sold on Ebay and Craigslist, which apparently a great number of you do.
The Dev Team has also eluded that they are ready to work on an unlock solution for the soon to be released iPhone 3GS. They don’t want you to ask them about it. If they told you, they would have to kill you.
P.S. For the new iPhone 3GS, please don’t expect periodic updates about any progress we have or don’t have. Nothing gives Apple the upper hand like someone tweeting or blogging partial hack results. That’s not how cat & mouse is played
That’s how the cat gets fed.
UPDATE: The Dev team have changed the name of the unlock to Ultrasnow. Pointing out that the new soft unlock with work with all basebands as long as you are on FW 3.0
