BOING BOING GADGETS ONLINE: gadgets.boingboing.net MORE OF OUR CES COVERAGE gadgets.boingboing.net Boing Boing Gadgets editors Joel and Brownlee got a hands-on demo with the new Palm Pre, and Boing Boing’s video team was there to cover them. Watch the whole review above. In the first half of the video, Brownlee and Joel grill a Palm rep — who doesn’t want to let either of them touch the device — about features and what’s under the hood. In the second half of today’s video, our fellas huddle over brews and watered-down show floor drinks with Jon Stokes from Ars Technica for a post-game analysis. Verdict seems to be that if this is Palm’s “hail mary,” it just might work. The Pre seems pretty sweet. More on the Pre at palm.com. ————————– Sponsor shout-out: Boing Boing’s video coverage of CES 2009 is sponsored by WEPC.com, in partnership with Intel and Asus. WePC.com is intended to be a site where users come together to “share ideas, images and inspiration about the ideal PC.” Participants’ designs, feature ideas and community feedback will be evaluated by ASUS and “could influence the blueprint for an actual notebook PC built by ASUS with Intel inside.”

CES Gadgets: Google Nexus One

Google showed off the features of its new Nexus One mobile phone at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Some analysts say it could challenge Apple iPhone’s market domination. (Jan. 7)

I just finished watching the Billy Mays tribute on the Discovery Channel.  Feeling a bit sentimental I started searching for Billy Mays stuff on the net.  I came across this gem of a useless, yet fun, application: Billy Mays Caps Lock.

The application, when installed, plays random Billy Mays sound bites of his famous pitch lines when you hit the caps lock key.  After installing, I hit my caps lock to hear Billy say, “Hi, Billy Mays here!”, which quickly brought a smirk upon my face.

Famed TV pitchman, Billy Mays, has been found dead in his Tampa, FL home early Sunday morning, June 28th.  Mays was found unresponsive by his wife and was pronounced dead by Tampa Fire and Rescue at 7.45 a.m. local time. “There are no signs of forced entry to the residence and no foul play is suspected,” Lt. Brian Dugan of the Tampa Police Department said. The Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to complete the autopsy on Mays’s body by Monday afternoon.

“Although Billy lived a public life, we don’t anticipate making any public statements over the next couple of days,” Billy Mays’s wife, Deborah, said. “Our family asks that you respect our privacy during these difficult times,” she added.

UPDATE: On Saturday, Mays was on board the U.S. Airways passenger plane which made a hard landing at Tampa International Airport. No one was injured in the accident, according to airport officials, but Mays told a local television station that an item fell on his head. “All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head,” Mays joked. Lt. Brian Dugan called it “pure speculation” to say his death could be related to the plane incident.

Today is a sad day whether you liked Billy Mays or the sound of his voice sent shivers up your spine.  Billy, along with his friend and business partner Anthony “Sully” Sullivan, have been pitching gadgets and gizmos for the last couple decades.  I think it would be quite hard to find anybody in the US that hasn’t heard Billy shout his line, “Hi, Billy Mays here!”

RIP Billy Mays, you will be missed.
