These instructions will walk you through jailbreaking your iPhone on your PC using the Dev-Teams official Redsn0w software for Windows. This will not jailbreak the new iPhone 3G S. Redsn0w is also available for Mac (Intel only) You can follow the same instructions.  I used Redsn0w on a Vista PC but it should work with XP as well.

Use Redsn0w to:

  • Jailbreak and unlock OG iPhone
  • Jailbreak iPhone 3G
  • Jailbreak iPod Touch 1st Gen
  • Jailbreak iPod Touch 2nd Gen

To begin, you will need to download the following: (all downloads require login)

Save these to your desktop for easy access.

1. Make sure you have updated your device officially to OS 3.0 through iTunes.

2. Make sure your iPhone is off.  Do this by holding the power button (top of phone) then slide to power off.

3. Connect your iPhone via USB.

4. Start Redsn0w.exe

redsnow-files

5. Browse for your firmware that you downloaded. (Make sure you have the correct firmware for your device) Then click next.

redsnow-browse1

6. If you want to unlock your OG iPhone then check both Cydia and Unlock.  If you do not need to Unlock then only have Cydia checked and proceed to step 7.

redsnow-options

6 a. If you are unlocking your iPhone then you need to browse for the 3.9 and 4.6 Bootloaders that you should have downloaded and saved.  Then click next.

redsnow-bootloaders

7. Redsn0w will ask you to make sure your iPhone is powered off but you should have done that already.  If you didn’t follow the directions to do it now.

redsnow-device-off

8. Once your iPhone is off, be prepared for step 8 because it starts quickly, then click next.

9. This is where you will put your iPhone into DFU mode.  Follow the instructions in order to achieve this.

redsnow-dfu

10. If you correctly put your iPhone into DFU mode you will see that Redsn0w will begin the jailbreak process.  Let it do it’s thing, which should take about 5 minutes.  (Redsn0w crashed the first time I tried to jailbreak and left me with the “Running PwnApple” on my phone.  Don’t worry, just power off your phone again and start the process from the beginning.  It worked perfectly the 2nd time for me.)

Redsn0w gives you instructions through the entire process so you should not have any problems as long as you follow everything exactly.  If you have any problems please leave a comment so we can help.

Yesterday the iPhone Dev-Team only released Pwnage tool for Mac OS X which left many PC users begging for them to release QuickPwn for Windows.  They have now released the Windows version of their jailbreak software code named Redsnow.  Redsnow previously was the name of their iPod Touch 2nd Gen jailbreak, but this morning they have re-released it to also include the OG iPhone, 3G iPhone, and both versions of the iPod Touch; this will not jailbreak the new iPhone 3G S.  Redsnow provides similar function as QuickPwn and is available for Mac or PC.  If you want to build a custom firmware, use Pwnage tool, but that is only available for Mac at the moment.  If you have a 3G using Yellowsnow to unlock and want to stay unlocked, do not use Redsnow, you want to wait for the release of Ultrasnow that will be available through Cydia soon.

Check back soon for a full walk-through on how to jailbreak your iPhone using Redsnow.

As always, use this software at your own risk.  Make sure you read all instructions and warnings.

Read the whole post in full before attempting anything!

redsn0w is an easy to use, multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking and unlocking (iPhone 2G only) tool for the iPhone 2G (original iPhone), the iPhone 3G (but not the 3GS) and also the iPod touch (first and second generation). Currently it is available for Windows and Mac OS X (there are some issues using redsn0w with OS X PPC, please use an Intel Mac until we have this problem resolved).

REDSN0W PROVIDES SIMILAR FUNCTIONALITY TO QUICKPWN.

If you want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility it is suggested that you use ‘PwnageTool’ on Mac OS X.

  1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
  2. Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).
  3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
  4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
  5. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest version of redsn0w.
  6. This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release
  7. redsn0w will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
  8. redsn0w WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and the iPhone 3G (not the iPhone 3GS).

To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!)

The iPhone Dev-Team have officially released their Pwnage Tool application for jailbreaking the iPhone OG, iPhone 3G, and iPod Touch 1st Gen running OS 3.0.  This release is only for use on a Mac running OS X.  A similar tool, QuickPwn for Mac and PC, will be released very soon.  As always you are cautioned to use this at your own risk as it may void your warranty and if you don’t follow directions well then you may want to find someone who can because you could bork up your device.  Here is the release straight from the iPhone Dev-Team blog.  Make sure you read the entire post to make sure your device is supported.  There are certain restrictions if your phone is unlocked and if you have an iPod Touch 2nd Gen.  Download links for the Pwnage Tool are included.

This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.0 firmware from Apple, read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of some bugs and unexpected changes this will be a multipart release, starting with the release of PwnageTool for Mac OS X. QuickPwn for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime soon, please don’t bug us about it, we are working flat out to get everything finished to release them.

  1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use PwnageTool right now. UltraSn0w is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be release via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 unlock works with this PwnageTool release.
  2. Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you can get it via Cydia or Icy).
  3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
  4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
  5. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.0 capable version of PwnageTool.
  6. This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release.
  7. PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
  8. PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.

Baseband 101

The ‘baseband’ is the generic nickname given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network. Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features). The 3.0 update for the iPhone 3G contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband.

SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G

This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, simply upgrade to 3.0 using iTunes and then use PwnageTool to create an ipsw and then use this to jailbreak your phone.

iPhone 2G (1st Generation)

Update or Restore your iPhone 2G with iTunes then use PwnageTool to do the magic, ‘nuff said, you don’t need to worry about anything, the baseband will be unlocked, the phone jailbroken.

iPod Touch 1G (Original iPod Touch)

Update to 3.0 with iTunes and use PwnageTool.

iPod Touch 2G (New iPod Touch)

Sorry, no support at this time within PwnageTool, use Redsn0w instead.

Happy Jailbreaking

Huge numbers of irate iPhone owners voiced their displeasure concerning the upgrade policy that alienated them from getting the advertised $199 and $299 price for the upcoming iPhone 3GS due to launch Friday.  Users spread the word through Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, and various other social networks.  AT&T has been a top trending topic on Twitter for the last couple weeks since Apple’s announcement of the iPhone 3GS at WWDC.  AT&T has apparently heard the mass plea for a better solution to subsidized pricing.

While I’m glad to see them listening to their customers, I would like to see them take a different approach across the board with their upgrade policy, not just with the iPhone.

The following video also addresses some other concerns AT&T customers have.

An Update for Our Customers

Some customers have had questions about our plans and policies for iPhone 3G S, and we’d like to provide you with answers. We’d also like to announce a change to the date when some iPhone customers are eligible for our best upgrade pricing to iPhone 3G S.

Pricing

Importantly, we want our customers to better understand our wireless device upgrade program. Like most U.S. carriers, we offer a variety of phones that we sell below our actual cost when customers agree to sign service agreements. In general, the more a customer spends with us, the quicker they become eligible for a price break on a new device. For example, iPhone customers who spend more than $99 a month per line with us generally are eligible for an upgrade between 12 and 18 months into their contract.

We also currently offer early upgrade pricing only for iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G.

All of that said, we’ve been listening to our customers. And since many of our iPhone 3G customers are early adopters and literally weeks shy of being upgrade eligible due to iPhone 3G S launching 11 months after iPhone 3G, we’re extending the window of upgrade eligibility for a limited time.

We’re now pleased to offer our iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible in July, August or September 2009 our best upgrade pricing, beginning Thursday, June 18.

If you’re one of the many customers who will benefit from this change, please note that our upgrade eligibility tools will reflect this change on Thursday, June 18.

We invite you to come to our stores beginning Friday during normal store hours, although please be aware that customer demand may exceed supply in some of our stores. You may also preorder online on June 18 at www.att.com/iphone, and your iPhone 3G S will arrive in 7 – 14 days. Or you can purchase iPhone 3G S at Apple’s retail and online stores, as well as at other popular retailers.

If you’re one of the customers who benefits from this change, and you’ve already preordered from an AT&T store, we’ll adjust the price of the device when you pick it up. If you benefit from the change and you pre-ordered from AT&T online, we’ll send you an e-mail and issue you a credit.

If you pre-ordered an iPhone 3G S through Apple’s online store, your upgrade eligibility will be reassessed based on AT&T’s new upgrade policy for iPhone 3G owners. If you are eligible for the lower price, Apple will issue you a credit for the difference as applicable.

So, what if you still aren’t eligible for our best upgrade pricing and you still want iPhone 3G S now? You do have options:

  • You may qualify for the iPhone 3G S early upgrade price of $399 (16GB) or $499 (32GB).
  • You can pay full retail—and not have to sign a 2-year contract—at $599 (16GB) or $699 (32GB).
  • You can wait until you’re eligible for our best upgrade pricing. We invite you to check your upgrade eligibility by visiting www.att.com/iphone, calling *NEW# (*639#) on your AT&T device (we’ll send you a text with upgrade information), or visiting any of our over 2,200 stores.

If you want more details on our pricing and upgrade policy, check out our FAQs. And as always, you may visit one of our stores to talk with a representative.

In Summary

We’ve listened to our customers — and hope our response helps answer some of your questions and concerns.

We are incredibly proud to be the U.S. carrier for the new iPhone 3G S and will work around the clock to be ready on June 19 to serve customers who are interested in the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet.

The iPhone Dev Team has released, on their blog, that they have successfully ported their Yellowsnow carrier unlock to work with the upcoming Apple release of iPhone OS 3.0. The Yellowsnow unlock was developed for the 3G iPhone when OS 2.0 was released. Many users were hoping for this because if you had been using an iPhone 3G on a carrier, other then AT&T, you would not be able to take advantage of the new functionality in the much anticipated 3.0 update, without losing their call function. No worries now apparently; the Dev Team says they will showcase their official/unofficial Yellowsnow Ultrasnow unlock today via a live feed. A member of the Dev Team, MuscleNerd, will twitter the live feed link later this afternoon. If you want to see this first hand make sure you follow @MuscleNerd on Twitter.

I have been locked to AT&T since the release of the OG iPhone and have had no need to use the Yellowsnow unlock, but apparently many have. I have never seenulc042608dr the reason for unlocking the iPhone when AT&T forces your to sign a 2 year contract. Unlocking the iPhone only makes sense if you purchase your iPhone from the plethora sold on Ebay and Craigslist, which apparently a great number of you do.

The Dev Team has also eluded that they are ready to work on an unlock solution for the soon to be released iPhone 3GS. They don’t want you to ask them about it. If they told you, they would have to kill you.

P.S. For the new iPhone 3GS, please don’t expect periodic updates about any progress we have or don’t have. Nothing gives Apple the upper hand like someone tweeting or blogging partial hack results. That’s not how cat & mouse is played :) That’s how the cat gets fed.

UPDATE:  The Dev team have changed the name of the unlock to Ultrasnow.  Pointing out that the new soft unlock with work with all basebands as long as you are on FW 3.0

i was wondering when you jailbreak your iPhone, does the phone calling part still work and does At&t find out and cut off your service? Why does it say your phone activated when you do the process and does this do any damage? How many times can you jailbreak your iphone? and what issues should i know about jailbreak it?
