This is our series of usability speed tests as performed on the Palm Pre. If anyone wants to try these tests themselves, for details, see: pocketnow.com We encourage you to post video responses of you performing these tests on your own smartphone device… especially if you can do them faster than us.

My 2nd one is breaking down now lol. for some odd reason it’s starting to re-boot itself every 2 days… another new one! haha yay (very soon! ) I’ve been with Sprint since 2004 and it hasn’t failed for me at all so I’m stickin with it. Luckily i’m paying for insurance which i dont think it’s to much, i think its only like $6 a month which i think is definitly worth it because usually my phones always break after the 1st year through my contract.
Hey thanks for the reply! I decided to get my pre a couple of weeks ago and so far I love it. Especially the new Sprint plan they got with unlimited everything for $70. Yeah I had the same problem with the built quality. I had replace mine twice! 1st one had a faulty slider and the second one would turn off whenever I answer a call which was weird. But now Im crossing my fingers this one lasts me a long time because I dont have the insurance lol. How many years have you been with Sprint?
I found a way to get internet while i’m on roaming for the pre, which in your contract it only lets you get about 300mb over roaming but tbh that’s good enough for me jsut cause i’m rarely on roaming.
I like the Pre! it works really good. though it is my 2nd cause the last one actually had some sliding problems but Sprint replaced it free of charge and just exchanged it for a newer one! and yea it was even more new! it had a diffrent middle button than the last one i had but works faster as my last one. (i got the very 1st pre when it came out June 6th though =P) I’ve always been with sprint so i can’t really compare it to other services but it works for me.
Sarcasm?
That was much more effort than it should have been for several of those tasks. My iPhone does a better job, but still not as well as it should.
Those screen transitions were not very smooth, either.
How much do you like your Pre? I’m thinking about switching to Sprint and buying a Pre by the end of the week.
yeah palm is so fast!!! it is!!
I don’t know, my Nokia Symbian phone multitasks very well. You could have 10 apps running and it doesn’t slow it down almost at all. But maybe that’s because Nokia’s Symbian is very basic in terms of aesthetics so it doesn’t waste CPU and RAM on little things like transitions. Also there is a lot of RAM on my phone (128 Mb), so you really have to be trying to run out.
But for some reason, this Pre is acting about as slow as my original Razr V3, which was slow as hell.
I have a pre! It’s faster than this is but just like any smartphone, the more u put on it, the slower it gets. Even da iPhone or Storm and even da G1
As far as I know both devices share the same OMAP3430 Processor that is scalable from 600Mhz to 1Ghz. And it’s running on 600 in both devices. So the hardware requirements match the iPhone 3GS’s hardware and that’s all good. The WebOS is obviously only gonna get quicker with the coming updates and also it is more robust with the awesome multitasking and notification features. I’d definitely go for Pre I don’t care how quick the iRubbish is thank you very much
Also don’t forget using the Pre can be extremely quick since you can keep the applications open so you only have to get back to the app you want in about 2 seconds
there you go
This is true. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I beleive good sir that the Palm Pre’s 600mhz proc is underclocked to 500mhz while the iPhone 3gs runs at 600mhz.
unix?
instead of clicking the middle button u should have just slid ur finger up to open the apps faster. idk though, u should try it when it really loads instead of it already pre-loaded in the backround.
i have a pre too, yay pre!
The iPhone 3GS has the exact same processor as PALM PRE.
the 3gs should be faster, it’s OS has has several more years to mature and it has a faster processor than the pre. The pre’s OS is 2.5 months old, it’ll get faster.
My Pre is not that slow at all.
Look at my video on my page.
WOW! I’m using a 3Gs and the pre’s speed is laughable it borders unacceptable! I respect the pre though it’s putting up a decent fight.
my blackberry is pretty snappy…
thank goodness for android…bout time htc decided to go after a decent os…
nice laptop
some people expect tooooo much from a phone, it just came out, first of its kind, give it time.
if u didnt notice he was getting a notification of some sort while he was doing that
looks like this is a solid fail, 2 seconds+ for click response when adding a contact (with NO other applications open) = this device is FAR too sluggish
apple kids are mad
