New Virus Hits Jailbroken iPhones: How to Fix It
A new virus, or more like a security breach, has been found. Like a previous Rickroll breach, this one uses the SSH in order to gain control of your iPhone. Unlike the Rickroll virus that only changed your wallpaper to a picture of Rick Astley, this one is actually trying to steal your personal information and banking passwords.
If you have jailbroken your iPhone you most likely have OpenSSH installed. OpenSSH allows you to view and edit the core files on your iPhone over a WiFi connection. It is highly recommended to change your password for this because every newly jailbroken iPhone with OpenSSH defaults to the password “alpine” for root directory access to your iPhone. I’m actually really surprised that it has taken this long for someone to come up with a virus to hit all the people that never change this password.
Here I will show you how to change it and protect your iPhone from intrusions. It is super easy and only takes a minute to change.
Go to Cydia and install “MobileTerminal”
Open MobileTerminal
There are two directories on your iPhone, “root” and “mobile” We want to change the password for both. When you first start MobileTerminal you will be in the “mobile” directory. To change the password, type “passwd” and hit enter.
It will ask for the current password which is “alpine” or “dottie” Try “alpine” first.
It will then say “Changing password for mobile” and ask for the new password. Enter a new unique password and hit enter.
It will then ask you to “Retype new password”. Type in the new password and hit enter. Your password is now changed for the “mobile” directory
Now, we need to switch to the “root” directory. Type “su root” and hit enter.
It will ask for the current password of the “root” directory which should be “alpine” Type this in and hit enter.
Just like earlier, you need to type “passwd” to prompt the changing of the password.
Type in your new password and retype your new password.
Your iPhone is now secure from these viruses that attack using the default SSH password.
