iPhone App of the Week: Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2009

With Apple’s new parental controls introduced into iPhone OS 3.0, apps that previously would have been rejected for “mature content” are now able to be sold on the app store with a 17+ age rating. Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2009 is a prime example of this somewhat ridiculous rating system.

SI Swimsuit 2009 is marketed as a calendar application but includes some of the sexiest photos and video you are going to find on your iPhone. At first, the app asks you to set up your calendar. You can associate each month of the calendar with the swimsuit model of your choice. Some of the models you can choose are Brooklyn Decker, Bar Refaeli, and Danica Patrick. Selecting a model is really simple as dragging their picture to the month you would like. After setting up your iCandy for each month, you can then choose your favorite sports teams from the NFL, MLB, NCAAF, NBA, and a few more, to show important dates like their game schedules on the calendar.

After setting this up you get to the heart of this app; you can view pictures and video of every model. Each model has 10-15 photos and a video associated with them. Flipping your iPhone from landscape calendar view to horizontal, shows the full size pictures that you can swipe through. My one gripe here is that you cannot zoom into the photos, so if your trying to get that closeup view any certain body part, you’re out of luck.

Once you are done drooling at the still pics, you can rotate back to landscape and click on videos. Most of the videos document the photo shoots for each model. The videos stream from SI’s server, so quality is dependent on your connection: 3G or WiFi. Over WiFi, the videos are pretty crisp and load quickly. Some of the videos show them getting their paint on bikinis applied; I highly recommend Brooklyn Decker’s video.
