Rock Your Phone has released a new app called MyWi. MyWi allows you to turn your iPhone 3G into a WiFi Hotspot that you can connect multiple devices to. MyWi can connect your laptop to the internet through WiFi, bluetooth, or directly through USB. The app only works with the iPhone 3G at the moment, but they are working on adding the iPhone 3G[s] to the supported devices.  UPDATE: It seems that if you install RockYourPhone from Cydia instead of the desktop application, it works with the iPhone 3G[s].

Details from RockYourPhone.com:

Create a WiFi HotSpot with a press of a finger! Wherever you are – you can connect your laptop or other mobile device to your iPhone easily!

Features:
- Create WiFi Hotspot to connect mutiple laptops or mobile devices to share your iPhone’s internet connection
- 40 bit and 104 bit WEP Security to prevent others from accessing your WiFi HotSpot
- Ability to enable USB and Bluetooth Tethering on your iPhone as well
- Broadcasts the Network Name (SSID) – no need to fuss with creating an adhoc network on your laptop
- Uses less battery and much faster then PdaNet due to native routing
- Shows up and down bandwith usage

NOTE: MyWi does not support the iPhone 2G. Please see your carrier contract for eligibility and/or additional fees.

In my testing with MyWi, I have had great success. It is extremely easy to set up and be tethering in less than a minute. I immediately set up a WEP key to keep it secure then turned on USB and Bluetooth tethering. Almost instantly, I was surfing the net at quite respectable speeds. Loading multiple tabs in Firefox did not slow it down one bit. Many pages loaded almost as fast as my cable connection.

Another very nice feature with MyWi is that there is no need to set up proxies. I was able to connect through Firefox, Yahoo Messenger, and MSN messenger without having to mess with any settings what-so-ever. You can use other applications on the iPhone at the same time as tethering, as well as surf the net with Safari.

Connecting via WiFi is also very easy.  MyWi broadcasts it’s network name (SSID) for you to connect to.  When you look for WiFi connections on your laptop you will see your iPhone and can easily select it.  Other tethering solutions require that you set up an adhoc network which is not hard to do, but takes time.

MyWi is not the first tethering app for the iPhone but in my testing so far, it is the best. PDANet, another tethering app, is very similar but it does not allow for bluetooth tethering and speeds are not up to par with MyWi. My experiences with PDANet showed half the speed with the same 3G connection tethered via USB.

MyWi sells for $9.99 through RockYourPhone.com but you can try it for 10 days FREE.

The biggest complaint about the iTunes App Store is that you can’t try before you buy. The great thing about Rock Your Phone is that they allow you to try all of their apps without committing any $$$. They work on the basis that if you like the app then you pay for it; if you don’t, you are not out anything.

MyWi does require a jailbroken iPhone and if your carrier finds out you are tethering without paying them for it, you could incur some charges. I don’t suggest using your iPhone for your sole source of internet for all of your devices, but it works really well in a pinch.
