Raining Purple in July: Purplera1n iPhone 3G[s] Jailbreak Released
George Hotz (Geohot) has released his jailbreak solution for the iPhone 3G[s] called Purplera1n. Hotz first made fame for being the first to unlock the OG iPhone. As of right now the jailbreak is for Windows only (XP and Vista, no 7) and you must be running the latest version of iTunes. Hotz says a Mac version is in the works.
In order to jailbreak your iPhone 3G[s] you need to head over to Purplera1n.com and download the purplera1n.exe.
Instructions:
Start Purplera1n.exe. Connect your iPhone normally. Click “make it ra1n”. Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app. Then follow the on-screen instructions.
As with any time you are modding your iPhone, make sure you backup all data unless you want to lose it. Most likely you won’t lose it but on the rare occasion you do, wouldn’t it be nice to have a copy?
The iPhone Dev-Team and Geohot have had a rocky relationship while still helping each other with jailbreaking and unlocking of the iPhone. Like I had reported earlier when the Dev-Team said they would not release a jailbreak until OS 3.1 was released, I wondered if Geohot would release his own jailbreak solution in spite of the Dev-Team’s wishes.
I’m not sure what non-Apple approved apps will be immediately available for the iPhone 3G[s] but let us know your experience using purplera1n in the comments.
