Apparently saline can be used to inflate anything from breasts to foreheads. A bizarre new trend is hitting the body mod community of Japan right now called saline inflation. Saline inflation involves injecting a saline solution under the skin which causes it to seemingly inflate like a balloon. Bagelheads, a nickname they give themselves, inject saline into their their forehead then manipulate the mass with their fingers to resemble a bagel.

modcon-book-cover2This type of body modification dates back to the early 90′s, but is ballooning, pun intended, in Japan at this time. Jerome Abramovitch, a performance artist, brought this into popularity with his cover shot on the 2002 book “ModCon: The Secret World Of Extreme Body Modification” by Shannon Larratt. Abramovitch is photographed looking like the devil with what looks like a bagel stuffed under his forehead skin.

Saline inflation seemingly has gained popularity because it is not permanent like other body mods such as tattoos and earlobe stretching. The bagels created with the saline only last about a day before the solution dissipates into the body; that’s 24 hours too long for me.

I’ve never had the urge to mod my body with any sort of hardware; there was that one time someone pierced my ear while I was passed out. I do understand these people feel liberated by being able to express themselves this way, but I think there has to be a better way.  This definitely goes into my WTF file.

If you have the need to see more pictures of this weird trend hit up Bizzare
