AT&T Navigator iPhone Turn-By-Turn Voice GPS App Free $10
AT&T has released it’s re-branded TeleNav mobile navigation software, AT&T Navigator for iPhone. TeleNav also partners with competitors Sprint and Verizon with their GPS solutions: Sprint Navigator and VZ Navigator. The app itself is available free in the AppStore, but in order to use the service it will cost you $9.99 a month as an add on to your data plan. The monthly fee does include free map updates and live traffic updates. If you do not use GPS all the time you can start and stop the subscription at any time.
AT&T Navigator will work with the iPhone 3G and 3G S; the OG iPhone does not have a GPS chip. Maps are downloaded over 3G or Wifi, which makes me wonder, what happens when you are out in the middle of nowhere and you really need the maps, but you can’t get them because no cell coverage? I would prefer a solution that stored the maps locally so it would work as long as you have a GPS signal. Maps are rather large but that is why you have at least 8 gigs, and up to 32 gigs of storage. The app includes voice turn-by turn directions, 3D view, and points of interest.
TomTom has announced a GPS app and car kit to be available in the coming future. No pricing or details of map storage available, but I would guess it will not be cheap. I like that more companies are jumping into the GPS game because more competition only brings better and cheaper products for the consumer.
