Instructions How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3G On Windows PC With Redsn0w
These instructions will walk you through jailbreaking your iPhone on your PC using the Dev-Teams official Redsn0w software for Windows. This will not jailbreak the new iPhone 3G S. Redsn0w is also available for Mac (Intel only) You can follow the same instructions. I used Redsn0w on a Vista PC but it should work with XP as well.
Use Redsn0w to:
- Jailbreak and unlock OG iPhone
- Jailbreak iPhone 3G UPDATE: (If you want to unlock your iPhone 3G you need to use Ultrasn0w. Instructions here: How To Unlock iPhone 3G With Ultrasn0w)
- Jailbreak iPod Touch 1st Gen
- Jailbreak iPod Touch 2nd Gen
To begin, you will need to download the following: (all downloads require login)
- Redsn0w for Windows: Redsn0w for Windows (4387)
- Redsn0w for Mac (Intel only): Redsn0w for Mac OS X official torrent
- Official firmware for your device: iPhone 3G 3.0 Restore firmware .ipsw (571)
Save these to your desktop for easy access.
1. Make sure you have updated your device officially to OS 3.0 through iTunes.
2. Make sure your iPhone is off. Do this by holding the power button (top of phone) then slide to power off.
3. Connect your iPhone via USB.
4. Start Redsn0w.exe
5. Browse for your firmware that you downloaded. (Make sure you have the correct firmware for your device) Then click next.
6. Make sure Cydia is checked then click next.
7. Redsn0w will ask you to make sure your iPhone is powered off but you should have done that already. If you didn’t follow the directions to do it now.
8. Once your iPhone is off, be prepared for step 8 because it starts quickly, then click next.
9. This is where you will put your iPhone into DFU mode. Follow the instructions in order to achieve this. If you correctly enter DFU mode your screen will turn completely white.
10. If you correctly put your iPhone into DFU mode you will see that Redsn0w will begin the jailbreak process. Let it do it’s thing, which should take about 5 minutes. (Redsn0w crashed the first time I tried to jailbreak and left me with the “Running PwnApple” on my phone. Don’t worry, just power off your phone again and start the process from the beginning. It worked perfectly the 2nd time for me.)
Redsn0w gives you instructions through the entire process so you should not have any problems as long as you follow everything exactly. If you have any problems please leave a comment so we can help.

My Redsn0w application keeps crashing when it says uploading ram disk? What do i do?
That happened to me once. Power your phone off and start over. Also, try keeping iTunes open while running Redsn0w, I’m not sure if that was it but it worked for me.

i hope i have the right address. i did all your steps. it shows that it’s jailbroken but i dont see the pineapple guy running, so it automatically reboots itself and goes back to normal, it wont jailbreak. I have iphone 3g 16g 3.1 with firm ware 5.11.07… I dont know why its not jailbreaking. it shows everything but the pineapple guy. i did this 6 times. can someone help me.
Redsn0w only works with firmware 3.0.1 and older. It does not support 3.1. That is why it is not jailbreaking. In order to jailbreak firmware 3.1 you must use Pwnage tool. But, unfortunately pwnage tool only works on a Mac. You can search for a custom firmware that someone has made already and restore with it using iTunes.

It should be soon. It is going to be released directly in Cydia. Would you rather it be released before it’s absolutely ready and possibly bork up your phone, or wait just a bit for it? Keep checking back here, we will report on it as soon as it goes public.
Once it’s jail broken do you install the mobile installation file the same same as before in order to load cracked .ipa files (apps) to your iPhone/iTouch?
You need to install AppSync for 3.0. Mobile installation patch is only for 2.x

Sorry, I should have explained that you need to add the Cydia source http://cydia.hackulo.us and then you can install AppSync for 3.0 from Cydia. I’m glad you were able to figure it out though. Check back here for new stuff daily. Thanks.

I would just start over from the beginning. Make sure you are using the correct firmware and make sure you are entering DFU mode (white screen).

See Step #6. If you followed the instructions, Cydia will be installed on your iPhone at the end.
When uploading the ramdisk, I redsnOw just stop working. I tried keep itunes open and I tried holding the home button. Its just stops working. ANY HELP?!?!?
Start from the beginning. Make sure your phone is powered off before going into DFU. I did a friends phone the other day and it took me like 6 times before it worked. Keep holding the home button for another 8 seconds after it goes into DFU. For some reason that worked for me the other day on my friends phone.
I downloaded the firmware file, but when i extract it and open it up with redsn0w there isny anything there to open. Its not showing the .ipsw.. what do i do!
Are you downloading it with Safari? You have to turn off “Open safe files after downloading” You do this in Safari–> Preferences –> General
Or you can just use Firefox or IE
Man, i cant get tis thing to work. Ive tried it about 8 times and it crashes every single time. When i tried to do it with iTunes opened, itunes quit during the download. im not sure what im doing wrong…
and do you need the “iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Custom_Restore.ispw” file, because i only have the first one.

No, you want the regular .ipsw I just noticed that my image shows the custom restore ipsw. (UPDATE: I now changed the image to show the correct firmware.) That is one I created with PwnageTool. The correct one is the one you download here in the post.
Start over again, try holding the home button longer after it goes into DFU in step 9

Are you sure that you are getting your phone into DFU mode? If you correctly get into DFU your screen will turn completely white.
No, it doesn’t turn white… what does this means? Am I doing something wrong? Or missing a step?

You could also try deleting the Redsn0w download and re-download it. Maybe it got corrupted.
I already did this, but I can’t get DFU mode
I tried to download the restore firmware, but towards the end it says “failed” : Could not read the source file. ANy help? Using firefox on PC W XP
That’s odd. I just tried it myself and it worked. Does it get all the way to the end of the download and then fail?
I’m having the same problem…? Yes, just about to the end then fails. Also tried disabling my firewall but no dice.

First, are you jailbreaking on a Mac or PC? How far do you get with the instructions before your iPhone 3G freezes? Have you tried restoring with iTunes to legit 3.0 and starting over?
I’ve tried just about everything now… im running windows vista 32-bit and have tried jailbreaking my ipod with Redsn0w versions ,0.7.1, 0.7.2 and 0.8… and every time it crashes at the part where it says “Uploading Ramdisk”. I have tried everything.. such as changing the compatability to XP service pack 2, running as administrator, keeping itunes open whilst jailbreaking, starting over, putting in to DFU mode before program starts.. whichever variation i use it never works… please please help me!

What firmware are you on? What carrier? Did you unlock it?
I updated through iTunes from 2.2 to 3.0.1.
Then I downloaded iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore, it is working. When I want to use Apple there is no signal.
Please advice me what I have to do next ?
