Genius Playlists for the App Store?
If you have ever searched through iTunes for an app that does exactly what you want, then you know it’s not as easy as it should be. I usually end up buying an app only to find out that it’s close but not exactly what I want (I wish there was a “try before buy”). After suffering with an app I really don’t like, I eventually hear about another obscure app that fits exactly my needs. Why was this app so obscure? Perhaps 50,000 apps in the App Store could be the culprit? It seems that the success of the App Store has also become one of its biggest challenges.
Apple recently rolled out its Genius playlists which suggest music to users by searching music preferences then returning a suggested playlist consisting of more music from your library and music from iTunes that you may not have heard of yet. The “Genius” is that you find new artists you like, and the artists find new listeners to support them. It is a win-win situation.
Creating a Genius app list would need to involve a lot more, I believe, than a Genius music playlist. The super computers would have to juggle a lot of other info besides beats per minute, rhythms, genres, etc. Integrating a Genius App list is probably not as simple as it seems, but I’m sure the “Geniuses” at Cupertino can figure it out. Check out a more in-depth article regarding this at TechCrunch.
